Happy October!

Please don’t get me wrong. I love every month of the year, as each brings forth its unique beauty, events, and gifts. But, without question, October is my most favorite month and time of the year. Because around here, on the outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri and on the edge of the Ozarks foothills, October truly ushers in the beginning of Autumn.

As Summer seems to stretch longer and longer each year with Global Warming, October is when temperatures finally settle back into a more comfortable zone.

It is a time of progression, as October ushers in Autumn, which in turn ushers in the Holiday Season.

Excluding September, which is more and more an extension of summer now, I always look forward to and celebrate the true “ber” months: the months of October, November, and December. Could there be any better time of year?

Living A Life Of Gratitude — Thankful for the Early Years (Part 5 of a Series)

Happy Autumn Days!

It is a gorgeous Autumn day as I sit here to write this morning. Leaves on my neighbor’s ash tree turned a bright shade of yellow this week. In bright sunlight this morning, the yellow leaves are sparkling like jewels as they twist, turn, and spiral thru the air on brisk Autumn breezes.

And I am feeling grateful for not only the beautiful display of leaves but also for another spectacular Autumn day.

From my open window, I can hear a bird whose call I do not recognize, signaling migration is well underway. At this time of year, he may be the rear guard for his flock. Or perhaps simply late. I hope he catches up.

When not busy chasing acorns, squirrels are busy raiding my neighbor’s bird feeder for sunflower seeds. The delightful aroma of baking pumpkin muffins wafts down the hallway from another neighbor’s kitchen.

The smells, sights, and sounds of Autumn, my most favorite time of year. And I am grateful. All of them small, insignificant things, perhaps. But when you are mindful and consciously aware of the little blessings and living a life of gratitude, your awareness and world are open to so much more.

Developing An Attitude of Gratitude (Part 1 of a Series)

Well, look at that!

Here we are at the end of September already. How did that happen? It many ways, it appeared Summer with its record-setting heat would go on forever this year. And now the month of September is about to close out the books. Wow!

Soon, leaves will change colors and be falling to the ground, the days will be cool and the evenings downright chilly, pumpkin spice will flavor every other thing we pick up, apple pies will bake in the oven, and . . . .

Oh, wait a minute. Those are all good things, aren’t they?!?

Of course they are! Everyone who knows anything about me knows that my favorite time of the year is Autumn, and it has finally arrived. October will open the door to the beautiful season of Autumn and following that the joyous Holiday Season. Oh, yes. My favorite time of the year is here.

Let us rejoice and be glad! 🤠 🐻 🍂 🧡 🍎 🌻 🍁 🎃 🌻 🍏 🍂 🍁

But, returning to the present for just a moment, some folks say that they have “eyes like a hawk.” In my case, that may be true.

The vision of hawks, like all predators, is deficient in discerning fine details. And that’s why zebras have stripes, by the way. If they remain motionless, standing still, lions cannot pick them out from the surrounding tall grasses.

But, the vision of predators is astounding in their ability to detect the slightest motion from great distances, and it is that ability which is key to predators detecting and locating their prey.

Now, please don’t get me wrong. Not meaning to imply that I am a ‘predator’ in any way, shape, or form. Think of me more like a lounging deer beneath the shade of a large oak tree while slowly munching on a chocolate bar, than a tiger stalking its prey thru the tall grass. But, I seem to be blessed with vision that can detect and key in on the slightest movement around me.

To the point, simply gazing out my window just now, I spotted a little chipmunk scampering along the top of the curb across the parking lot entrance beneath my third-floor window. He (she?) raced along, darted beneath a large pine tree, and then into where I suspect a chipmunk nest is among a pile of rocks at the side of my neighbor’s house. I frequently see them around that area.

After observing the little guy for merely a few seconds as he dashed along, I uttered a silent “Thank You!” prayer, feeling blessed to see and enjoy such a sight. Thankful for my eyes to have been gazing in that direction, and for the ability to have detected and zeroed in on the movement. Like a hawk. At precisely the right moment in time. Luck? Coincidence? Blessing?

I consider such little things as that to be a blessing. And if we cultivate a mindset of gratitude and thankfulness, we can discover a whole new world of wonderment, magic, and perhaps even miracles that surround us throughout the day. All day. Every day.

Blessings — A little chipmunk dashing along the curbside. A squirrel sitting on a branch just over our head, busily gnawing on an acorn. A chickadee “dee-dee-deeing” its song as we pass by. The beautiful, full-throated song of a Cardinal in springtime. A stranger opening a door for us when loaded down with grocery bags. An unexpected call, message, or visit from a friend on a day when we may be feeling down or under the weather. A compliment from a stranger. And so many more little occurrences in our daily lives. In my mind, they are all little blessings.

A roof over our heads and a warm bed to sleep in. The ability to shop and have a pantry full of food to benefit from regular meals. The safety and health of not only ourselves, but of our family, friends, and loved ones as well. Bigger blessings.

Are you thankful for all the blessings, big and small, in your life? If we think about it, there is always something to be thankful for, no matter how small. I encourage you to live a life of gratitude today.

We are living in stressful times these days, no doubt about it. I won’t even list all the reasons. You know why. We live it every day in the news at night. But did you know that living a life a gratitude can actually help with that?

Happy November Autumns — When the Frost is on the Pumpkin!

Hey howdy, and thank you for visiting with us! Recently, I have been thinking about fall visits to my uncle’s farm as a small boy years ago. Enjoying beautiful November Autumns in the countryside.

We just went thru a much below-average cold spell the past week, feeling more like January than October with overnight lows down to 22F each night. Early morning walks with my little chihuahua (bundled in a sweater) at 26F. The grass and fallen leaves were covered in frost and I could see my breath in the air. My kind of morning!

We are warming back up now to more temps above normal for the next few days before another cold front comes thru and brings it all back down again mid-week. But such is the rollercoaster month of November here in this part of the Midwest each year.

One of my Mother’s favorite poems and one I became more familiar with in school years ago was “When The Frost Is On the Punkin”, by James Whitcomb Riley.

The poem is another one of those things that suddenly popped into my head a few days ago when we had the frosty weather and mornings here during the cold snap.

“Put your jacket on this morning, “the frost is on the punkin,” my Mother would say as I was gathering my things for school.

As those who follow me here and on Facebook know, from May to October I struggle to survive each Summer, and am all about Autumn. I love the crisp, invigorating air of frosty morning walks and drives thru the countryside in the fall.

Accordingly, I enjoy the manner in which the “When The Frost Is On the Punkin” poem was written, in such a colorful, rural vernacular style. It just seems to perfectly suit the theme and in my mind transports me back to beautiful, crisp, and frosty mornings on my uncle’s farm in the country years ago.

So, sharing the poem below with everyone, as it seems so appropriate for this Autumn time of the year when days grow shorter, the sun highlights hillsides dazzling in golds and reds, fallen leaves carpet the meadows, the scent of woodsmoke fills the evening air, and frost is on the grass. And pumpkins.

“When the Frost is on the Punkin”

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,

And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,

And the clackin’ of the guineys, and the cluckin’ of the hens,

And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;

O, it’s then’s the times a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,

With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,

As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere

When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here—

Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,

And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;

But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze

Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days

Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock—

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,

And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;

The stubble in the furries—kindo’ lonesome-like, but still

A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;

The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;

The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover over-head!—

O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps

Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;

And your cider-makin’ ’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through

With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! …

I don’t know how to tell it—but ef sich a thing could be

As the Angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me—

I’d want to ’commodate ’em—all the whole-indurin’ flock—

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

Hooray for Autumn! We Are Back, Thinking About Fall and All The Great New Features And Things Ahead!

Well folks, here we are — back again. As they say, it’s been a minute, hasn’t it? It’s almost like starting over. Again.

I am just now resuming work and writing after a much-too-long, lengthy absence due to personal health issues. This time, another four-level spinal fusion surgery, followed by a complication and another major surgery a month later to remedy that. Anemic leaving the hospital, the last six months have been a period of slowly recovering and rebuilding strength, complete with two oral surgeries a month ago. For someone who is normally a fast healer impatient to get things going again, this has been a lesson in patience, accepting what is, and allowing everything to unfold and heal on its own schedule.

But — while not yet fully recovered, I am back to about 80%, it is my very favorite season of Autumn now with the holiday season soon to follow, and my story character friend Little Red Bear is back from his extended vacation and fishing trips during my absence, and we are both fit and raring to go again! We can talk more about my surgeries and personal health at a later time. So for now, let’s talk about Autumn, what is ahead here, and get back to it, shall we?

As stated above, this is unquestionably my favorite time of year. Days are getting cooler, the air is crisp and refreshing for early morning walks, and the leaves are beginning to change colors here.

Vivid Autumn memories begin to color my mind — the arrival of sweater weather –fall trips to my uncle’s farm when a youngster, hitching mules to the wagon and helping to bring in the last harvests of the season, scarecrows in the fields — raking leaves and jumping over and into piles — the fall smell of burning leaves and woodsmoke in the air — playing football after school and weekends, bonfires and hayrides, taking the kids to the Pumpkin Patch every year — carving Jack O’ Lanterns, creating Halloween costumes and Trick or Treating — hot chocolate, fresh apple cider, candied caramel apples, pumpkin pies, and so much, much more!

Autumn — don’t you love it?

After such a long (for me) downtime and so much to do to begin catching up now, I have the overwhelming urge to get busy working on everything all at once but at the same time find my desires and personal expectations exceed my ability to do that.

As my writing character, Little Red Bear, always reminds me — “Being busy is not the same as being productive, Jim. It only counts if you truly accomplish something.”

Yeah, that bear can be a real task master sometimes when it comes to getting down to working on and writing his stories. “Focus” and “Produce” are the keywords of the day around here now.

So, nevertheless relentlessly intrepid and sometimes overreaching perhaps, Little Red Bear has outfitted me with a ridiculously large, bear-sized pencil, and here is a rundown of what I am working on right now or will be soon, along with new posts and features coming soon thru the Autumn and coming Holiday Seasons . . . .

That is simply the reality. Once again, I have learned that not everything is within my control, to not issue promises or guarantees anymore, but rather merely to keep a steady writing pace and do my very best while allowing things to progress as they will.

Relax, Breathe, and Allow the Universe to unfold according to plan. As Disney fans of “The Mandalorian” have been reminded — “This is the Way.”

Sharing Autumn Joy & Free Wallpaper Images!

Little Red Bear’s best friend and neighbor, Bobo the Black Bear, stopped by a few minutes ago to inform Little Red Bear that the Rainbow Trout were biting this morning over at Little Piney Creek, and off they went, fishing poles in paws, right out the door in the middle of writing the next adventure story!

So, I figured now might be a good time to sit down to say —

HAPPY FALL, Y’ALL!

The Autumn Season is just beginning here in our neck of the woods. Most of the trees and lawns are still green, while a few trees are just beginning to change color, dropping a few odd leaves here and there. But not many yet. It’s still early. But at 94+ just the other day and back to mid-80s today, it can still feel like Summer despite my ‘internal calendar’ saying it is Fall.

Regardless of the thermometer reading, or maybe because of it, Little Red Bear and I thought we would do what we could to help ease everyone into a Fall mood.

As regular followers here know, we are all about freely sharing things here on the Writing Pages, so thought we would share some beautiful Autumn Wallpapers with everyone. Please feel free to download as many as you like.
