Happy October! Welcome Glorious Autumn!

Happy October!

Please don’t get me wrong. I love every month of the year, as each brings forth its unique beauty, events, and gifts. But, without question, October is my most favorite month and time of the year. Because around here, on the outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri and on the edge of the Ozarks foothills, October truly ushers in the beginning of Autumn.

As Summer seems to stretch longer and longer each year with Global Warming, October is when temperatures finally settle back into a more comfortable zone.

It is a time of progression, as October ushers in Autumn, which in turn ushers in the Holiday Season.

Excluding September, which is more and more an extension of summer now, I always look forward to and celebrate the true “ber” months: the months of October, November, and December. Could there be any better time of year?

Oh, October — how do I love thee? Let me count the ways . . . .

  • Seeing my Breath in the Crisp Morning Air
  • Cooler Days and Sweaters
  • Apple Picking
  • Hay Rides
  • Brisk, Chilly Nights with Wood Smoke in the Air
  • Homemade Soup Simmering on the Stove
  • The Heavenly Aroma of Homemade Bread Baking in the Oven
  • Hillsides Aglow with Beautiful Autumn Leaves
  • Apple Cider
  • Visits to the Pumpkin Patch
  • Running thru Cornfield Mazes
  • Butternut Squash Fresh From the Oven
  • Scarecrows
  • Pumpkin Pies
  • Raking Leaves into Piles for Kids to Jump Into and Play In
  • The Smell of Chocolate Chip Cookies Baking in the Oven
  • Making Apple Butter
  • Pumpkin Spice Stirred into Everything Nice
  • Carving Jack-o’-Lanterns
  • And . . . . Halloween Fun with Trick-or-Treaters at the Door!

Oh, beautiful October. How I have missed you!

I invite you to take a trip with Little Red Bear’s “Autumn Splendors” video. We recommend viewing on full screen with the speakers on! If you watch on YouTube and enjoy, please give a Like to help others find and enjoy it.

What do you love about October, and what would you add to the list? Have you been apple picking yet, or been on a hayride? Planning a visit to the Pumpkin Patch soon? Please tell us all about it in the Comments!

In “Anne of Green Gables,” the author L.M. Montgomery wrote —“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” And I could not agree more!

It is my distinct honor and pleasure to welcome you to my favorite month of the year — October!

Developing An Attitude of Gratitude (Part 1 of a Series)

Well, look at that!

Here we are at the end of September already. How did that happen? It many ways, it appeared Summer with its record-setting heat would go on forever this year. And now the month of September is about to close out the books. Wow!

Soon, leaves will change colors and be falling to the ground, the days will be cool and the evenings downright chilly, pumpkin spice will flavor every other thing we pick up, apple pies will bake in the oven, and . . . .

Oh, wait a minute. Those are all good things, aren’t they?!?

Of course they are! Everyone who knows anything about me knows that my favorite time of the year is Autumn, and it has finally arrived. October will open the door to the beautiful season of Autumn and following that the joyous Holiday Season. Oh, yes. My favorite time of the year is here.

Let us rejoice and be glad! 🤠 🐻 🍂 🧡 🍎 🌻 🍁 🎃 🌻 🍏 🍂 🍁

But, returning to the present for just a moment, some folks say that they have “eyes like a hawk.” In my case, that may be true.

The vision of hawks, like all predators, is deficient in discerning fine details. And that’s why zebras have stripes, by the way. If they remain motionless, standing still, lions cannot pick them out from the surrounding tall grasses.

But, the vision of predators is astounding in their ability to detect the slightest motion from great distances, and it is that ability which is key to predators detecting and locating their prey.

Now, please don’t get me wrong. Not meaning to imply that I am a ‘predator’ in any way, shape, or form. Think of me more like a lounging deer beneath the shade of a large oak tree while slowly munching on a chocolate bar, than a tiger stalking its prey thru the tall grass. But, I seem to be blessed with vision that can detect and key in on the slightest movement around me.

To the point, simply gazing out my window just now, I spotted a little chipmunk scampering along the top of the curb across the parking lot entrance beneath my third-floor window. He (she?) raced along, darted beneath a large pine tree, and then into where I suspect a chipmunk nest is among a pile of rocks at the side of my neighbor’s house. I frequently see them around that area.

After observing the little guy for merely a few seconds as he dashed along, I uttered a silent “Thank You!” prayer, feeling blessed to see and enjoy such a sight. Thankful for my eyes to have been gazing in that direction, and for the ability to have detected and zeroed in on the movement. Like a hawk. At precisely the right moment in time. Luck? Coincidence? Blessing?

I consider such little things as that to be a blessing. And if we cultivate a mindset of gratitude and thankfulness, we can discover a whole new world of wonderment, magic, and perhaps even miracles that surround us throughout the day. All day. Every day.

Blessings — A little chipmunk dashing along the curbside. A squirrel sitting on a branch just over our head, busily gnawing on an acorn. A chickadee “dee-dee-deeing” its song as we pass by. The beautiful, full-throated song of a Cardinal in springtime. A stranger opening a door for us when loaded down with grocery bags. An unexpected call, message, or visit from a friend on a day when we may be feeling down or under the weather. A compliment from a stranger. And so many more little occurrences in our daily lives. In my mind, they are all little blessings.

A roof over our heads and a warm bed to sleep in. The ability to shop and have a pantry full of food to benefit from regular meals. The safety and health of not only ourselves, but of our family, friends, and loved ones as well. Bigger blessings.

Are you thankful for all the blessings, big and small, in your life? If we think about it, there is always something to be thankful for, no matter how small. I encourage you to live a life of gratitude today.

We are living in stressful times these days, no doubt about it. I won’t even list all the reasons. You know why. We live it every day in the news at night. But did you know that living a life a gratitude can actually help with that?

Happy June! Happy Summer! A New Month and Another New Beginning! We’re Back and Going – Again!

Happy June and Happy Summer, y’all —

Here in the Midwest, on the outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri, June is the “Early Introduction to Summer” month. This is when all of the new summer activities are still exciting and fun before the inevitable heat and humidity of August wear you down. But we won’t go on about that stuff yet.

Right now, it is an exciting time, with June unquestionably the month of baby deer.

Birds begin to raise their young; baby squirrels and bunnies venture out of nests for the first time; there are summer barbeques, trips to the beach, water balloons, toasting marshmallows over a campfire, charging down the backyard slippy slide, visits to the park, and so much more.

But now, changing the topic to address the obvious for those who follow along here regularly— it has been a minute, as they say. Once again, I have been a few months away from writing following yet another extensive spinal surgery, for which I sincerely apologize to faithful followers. This surgery was extensive, from top to bottom, with the resultant recovery and rehab a much longer and slower hill to climb back up to get going again.

But more about that in a minute.  We have a lot of catching up to do.

For me, this year has raced past, and here we are already mere days before Christmas. How has it been for you this year? It seems the older I get the faster the time goes by!

December can be a very hectic month with the holiday season in full swing and so much to do. Holiday and event planning, parties to attend, shopping for gifts, wrapping, decorating, and more. Not even to mention baking cookies, cakes, pies, fudge, and all the other holiday treats and goodies to share.

It can all be overwhelming if we allow ourselves to get too caught up in it all. Let’s all resolve this year to pace ourselves, pause now and then, live in the moment, and truly enjoy the holidays, family and friends, and all of the joys and happiness they bring. And the new memories and connections we make.

Happy November Autumns — When the Frost is on the Pumpkin!

Hey howdy, and thank you for visiting with us! Recently, I have been thinking about fall visits to my uncle’s farm as a small boy years ago. Enjoying beautiful November Autumns in the countryside.

We just went thru a much below-average cold spell the past week, feeling more like January than October with overnight lows down to 22F each night. Early morning walks with my little chihuahua (bundled in a sweater) at 26F. The grass and fallen leaves were covered in frost and I could see my breath in the air. My kind of morning!

We are warming back up now to more temps above normal for the next few days before another cold front comes thru and brings it all back down again mid-week. But such is the rollercoaster month of November here in this part of the Midwest each year.

One of my Mother’s favorite poems and one I became more familiar with in school years ago was “When The Frost Is On the Punkin”, by James Whitcomb Riley.

The poem is another one of those things that suddenly popped into my head a few days ago when we had the frosty weather and mornings here during the cold snap.

“Put your jacket on this morning, “the frost is on the punkin,” my Mother would say as I was gathering my things for school.

As those who follow me here and on Facebook know, from May to October I struggle to survive each Summer, and am all about Autumn. I love the crisp, invigorating air of frosty morning walks and drives thru the countryside in the fall.

Accordingly, I enjoy the manner in which the “When The Frost Is On the Punkin” poem was written, in such a colorful, rural vernacular style.  It just seems to perfectly suit the theme and in my mind transports me back to beautiful, crisp, and frosty mornings on my uncle’s farm in the country years ago.

So, sharing the poem below with everyone, as it seems so appropriate for this Autumn time of the year when days grow shorter, the sun highlights hillsides dazzling in golds and reds, fallen leaves carpet the meadows, the scent of woodsmoke fills the evening air, and frost is on the grass. And pumpkins.

“When the Frost is on the Punkin”

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,
And the clackin’ of the guineys, and the cluckin’ of the hens,
And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it’s then’s the times a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,
With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.
They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here—
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;
But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.
The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries—kindo’ lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover over-head!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!
Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin’ ’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! …
I don’t know how to tell it—but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me
I’d want to ’commodate ’em—all the whole-indurin’ flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

Happy Halloween — An Original Poem Offering — “NEVERMORE”

Happy Halloween!

How are your Halloween preparations coming along? Are you wearing a costume, have it picked out or is it made and ready? Necessary make-up at hand? Wigs? Treat Bag or Plastic Pumpkin? False Vampire Teeth brushed and flossed for the big night?

Are you having or going to a Halloween party or get-together this year? Does anyone ever bob for apples anymore? That was messy fun back in the day!

What sort of treats will you be handing out to the little trick-or-treaters at your door? Does anyone make Popcorn Balls these days? I always seemed to get two or three of those in my bag years ago.  If you would like to read about other Halloween memories, check out “A Nostalgic Look Back at Halloween Trick or Treating in Days of Yore”

Offering a little poem for Halloween today, unabashedly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s classic poem — “The Raven.”

With a tip of the cap and nod to the master then . . . . .

“NEVERMORE”

We never know what lies in store,

When ghastly, ghostly spirits roar.

Witches soaring across the sky and moon

Causing knees to buckle before we swoon.

We’re never really sure, for certain,

What’s lurking unseen behind the curtain.

Or who may be on the ceiling knocking,

All the while our courage and bravery mocking.

Or who (or what!) it is that’s tapping,

At first so softly, gently  tapping,

But then so forcefully rapping on the outer door.

Heartbeats rising, chest walls pounding evermore.

Tapping, clapping, slapping, rapping!

With each thump, my will it’s sapping.

Oh so menacingly now rapping on our door,

Bearing fearsome, frightful tricks of yore.

Are we brave with steadfast courage?

Or, should our fearless pluck discourage?

And perhaps, in prudence, open the disquieting door  . . . . . . .

Nevermore?!?

Thanks always for visiting and having a bit of Halloween poetry fun with us today!

Aye, may there be overflowin’ treats and goody bags for all, mateys! And might your restful slumber be deep, with dreams of candy and pumpkin booty.

Happy Halloween! Rest well, me lads and lasses!  Arrrgghhh!!

When ghosts and ghouls roam and prowl, and porchstep pumpkins beckon and gleam, may luck be yours on Halloween!

If you enjoy your visits and time with us, I invite you to Join our Patron Community today, because together we can do so much!

With the help of patrons, we are able to donate free print copies of “The Adventures of Little Red Bear” stories and books to Senior Citizens,  School Libraries, Local Libraries, Classrooms, and those who could otherwise not obtain a copy.

Patrons also help my friend Little Red Bear and me to continue this as a Non-Monetized site free of distracting and questionable advertisements allowing for speedier loading and a more enjoyable experience for visitors,  dedicated solely to entertainment and educational purposes while sharing positive messages of Happiness, Inspiration, Kindness, Compassion, Positivity, Environmental Awareness, and Conservation with everyone.

With the support of our Patreon Community, all features here are offered “Free of Charge”. Because that’s just how we roll here. Will you help us keep it going?
