Living A Life Of Gratitude — Mental Health Benefits (Part 2 of a Series)

Happy October! And here we are, entering the gateway to the Autumn and Holiday Seasons.

What is the first thought that enters your mind when you hear the word or think about “Autumn?” Is it beautifully colored trees with their changing leaves? Is it pumpkin spice? Pumpkin pies? Apple picking? Carving Jack-o’-lanterns? Costumes and Trick-or-Treating? Or ??? Please tell us all about it in the Comments.

One of my most favorite things about the season of Autumn and this time of year is taking my little chihuahua companion for a walk in the evenings. It is already dark after dinner. Delightful wood smoke from fireplaces in nearby homes perfumes the air, and we can hear the rumble of a train passing by at the end of the street. And I am grateful for these things.


What are you grateful for these days? And did you know that living with an attitude of gratitude is beneficial to our mental health?

Studies have showed that living a life of gratitude has the potential to lower symptoms of depression, reduce stress, improve social relationships, and increase both willpower and resilience.

Scientists believe that living a life of gratitude helps to foster long-term thinking, which helps to bolster willpower.

But, what is “resilience” really? Resilience is the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties, challenges, disturbances, or turmoil in our lives.

Living a life of gratitude can help to decrease stress and anxiety by activating the areas in the brain that release the “feel-good” hormones serotonin and dopamine. To develop a sense of Inner Peace.

Begin by counting your blessings instead of problems or worries. At the end of each day, the last thing I do before going to sleep, is to offer a prayer of thankfulness, reviewing the day from morning to night, and expressing gratitude for all the positive aspects of the day, no matter how small.

Even being thankful for more negative things, the challenges, problems, irritants, and temptations that arose thru the day. They all have lessons to be thankful for too, as they provide opportunities to grow stronger and better through the experience.

When taking this approach, any problems or challenges become less daunting and worrying in our minds, reducing the stress we so often needlessly impose on ourselves.

Living a life of gratitude simply helps us to feel better and be happier in our lives, despite what may go on around us. And in addition, to be much more pleasant to be around for others. That all seems like a splendid thing, wouldn’t you agree?


Taking a short walk around the neighborhood, there will be many opportunities to practice living a life of gratitude as Autumn leaves fall.

I encourage you to be mindful of not only the colors of the leaves, beautiful as they are, but also the varieties of leaves and all the different shapes.

Take a moment to notice the patterns and shades of the different colors just in one leaf. Be thankful that this leaf fell just for you to behold in that moment.

Be observant, and watch as a leaf gently tumbles to the ground, perhaps swirling and twirling thru the air on a breeze. Touch and feel the texture of the leaf, its suppleness or dryness. Smell the leaf and its woodiness. Sniff for wood smoke in the air, the scent from leaves on the ground, or freshly mowed grass. Listen for a bird singing, or a squirrel barking out an alarm nearby. Or children playing. Feel the Autumn breeze on your face. Look up and see the unique patterns in the clouds as they pass by, never ever to form those exact patterns and shapes again.

Allow all of your senses to awaken. And in that moment, that one very special, mindful moment, simply relax, clear your mind, breathe, and permit yourself to feel and experience the sheer joyfulness of simply being alive. At this moment. Your moment. And be thankful.

Happy October! Welcome Glorious Autumn!

Happy October!

Please don’t get me wrong. I love every month of the year, as each brings forth its unique beauty, events, and gifts. But, without question, October is my most favorite month and time of the year. Because around here, on the outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri and on the edge of the Ozarks foothills, October truly ushers in the beginning of Autumn.

As Summer seems to stretch longer and longer each year with Global Warming, October is when temperatures finally settle back into a more comfortable zone.

It is a time of progression, as October ushers in Autumn, which in turn ushers in the Holiday Season.

Excluding September, which is more and more an extension of summer now, I always look forward to and celebrate the true “ber” months: the months of October, November, and December. Could there be any better time of year?

Developing An Attitude of Gratitude (Part 1 of a Series)

Well, look at that!

Here we are at the end of September already. How did that happen? It many ways, it appeared Summer with its record-setting heat would go on forever this year. And now the month of September is about to close out the books. Wow!

Soon, leaves will change colors and be falling to the ground, the days will be cool and the evenings downright chilly, pumpkin spice will flavor every other thing we pick up, apple pies will bake in the oven, and . . . .

Oh, wait a minute. Those are all good things, aren’t they?!?

Of course they are! Everyone who knows anything about me knows that my favorite time of the year is Autumn, and it has finally arrived. October will open the door to the beautiful season of Autumn and following that the joyous Holiday Season. Oh, yes. My favorite time of the year is here.

Let us rejoice and be glad! 🤠 🐻 🍂 🧡 🍎 🌻 🍁 🎃 🌻 🍏 🍂 🍁


But, returning to the present for just a moment, some folks say that they have “eyes like a hawk.” In my case, that may be true.

The vision of hawks, like all predators, is deficient in discerning fine details. And that’s why zebras have stripes, by the way. If they remain motionless, standing still, lions cannot pick them out from the surrounding tall grasses.

But, the vision of predators is astounding in their ability to detect the slightest motion from great distances, and it is that ability which is key to predators detecting and locating their prey.

Now, please don’t get me wrong. Not meaning to imply that I am a ‘predator’ in any way, shape, or form. Think of me more like a lounging deer beneath the shade of a large oak tree while slowly munching on a chocolate bar, than a tiger stalking its prey thru the tall grass. But, I seem to be blessed with vision that can detect and key in on the slightest movement around me.

To the point, simply gazing out my window just now, I spotted a little chipmunk scampering along the top of the curb across the parking lot entrance beneath my third-floor window. He (she?) raced along, darted beneath a large pine tree, and then into where I suspect a chipmunk nest is among a pile of rocks at the side of my neighbor’s house. I frequently see them around that area.

After observing the little guy for merely a few seconds as he dashed along, I uttered a silent “Thank You!” prayer, feeling blessed to see and enjoy such a sight. Thankful for my eyes to have been gazing in that direction, and for the ability to have detected and zeroed in on the movement. Like a hawk. At precisely the right moment in time. Luck? Coincidence? Blessing?

I consider such little things as that to be a blessing. And if we cultivate a mindset of gratitude and thankfulness, we can discover a whole new world of wonderment, magic, and perhaps even miracles that surround us throughout the day. All day. Every day.

Blessings — A little chipmunk dashing along the curbside. A squirrel sitting on a branch just over our head, busily gnawing on an acorn. A chickadee “dee-dee-deeing” its song as we pass by. The beautiful, full-throated song of a Cardinal in springtime. A stranger opening a door for us when loaded down with grocery bags. An unexpected call, message, or visit from a friend on a day when we may be feeling down or under the weather. A compliment from a stranger. And so many more little occurrences in our daily lives. In my mind, they are all little blessings.

A roof over our heads and a warm bed to sleep in. The ability to shop and have a pantry full of food to benefit from regular meals. The safety and health of not only ourselves, but of our family, friends, and loved ones as well. Bigger blessings.

Are you thankful for all the blessings, big and small, in your life? If we think about it, there is always something to be thankful for, no matter how small. I encourage you to live a life of gratitude today.

We are living in stressful times these days, no doubt about it. I won’t even list all the reasons. You know why. We live it every day in the news at night. But did you know that living a life a gratitude can actually help with that?

Happy June! Happy Summer! A New Month and Another New Beginning! We’re Back and Going – Again!

Happy June and Happy Summer, y’all —

Here in the Midwest, on the outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri, June is the “Early Introduction to Summer” month. This is when all of the new summer activities are still exciting and fun before the inevitable heat and humidity of August wear you down. But we won’t go on about that stuff yet.

Right now, it is an exciting time, with June unquestionably the month of baby deer.

Birds begin to raise their young; baby squirrels and bunnies venture out of nests for the first time; there are summer barbeques, trips to the beach, water balloons, toasting marshmallows over a campfire, charging down the backyard slippy slide, visits to the park, and so much more.

But now, changing the topic to address the obvious for those who follow along here regularly— it has been a minute, as they say. Once again, I have been a few months away from writing following yet another extensive spinal surgery, for which I sincerely apologize to faithful followers. This surgery was extensive, from top to bottom, with the resultant recovery and rehab a much longer and slower hill to climb back up to get going again.

But more about that in a minute.  We have a lot of catching up to do.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Simply a quick note to wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Between morning parades, dinner, football games, the Puppy Bowl, and pumpkin pies, let’s all take a moment to remember the true meaning and purpose of the day — THANKS – GIVING — a special day to give THANKS for all of the blessings in our lives. Even in the complex and challenging times, in the long run, they most frequently serve to make us even stronger and better in the end.

We should truly take time each and every day to pause and reflect in gratitude, giving “Thanks” for all of the blessings and gifts in our lives. I consciously choose to live each day in gratitude and joy, as I find it impossible to be miserable and thankful at the same time.

Happy “National Good Neighbor Day!”

Happy “National Good Neighbor Day!”

Do you remember the days when someone new would move into the neighborhood and folks would bring them warm casseroles for dinners or a basket of things to welcome them into the neighborhood?

Or, the tradition of bringing a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine as a blessing to ensure everyone would have enough to eat in the home? Some would bring salt and a new broom along, too.

Good Neighbor Day celebrates the importance of both having and being a good neighbor, and provides an opportunity to go out and get to know our neighbors a little better.

It is a blessing to have a good neighbor, and even more important to BE one. Oftentimes, neighbors become friends and help to look out for each other, especially if one or the other happens to be elderly or somehow impaired or challenged in any way.

Being a good neighbor helps to make good neighbors. Like so many things in life, it is simply all about kindness, isn’t it? A kind word, gesture, and a helping hand. Being there for someone and them being there for you in times of need.

I encourage you to call or take the time to visit with a neighbor today. We never know where it may lead, perhaps to a wonderful new friendship.
